POST FALLS — It should have been a wild ending for the Post Falls Trojans on Wednesday.

But, but rule, it turns out it wasn’t to be.

Senior Tyler French scored on a wild pitch with one out in the bottom of the ninth inning to give the Trojans a 5-4 win over the Lewiston Bengals in an Inland Empire League game at Post Falls High.

Due to a pitch count rules violation, Lewiston was declared the winner after Bengal coach Darren Trainor discovered Trojan pitcher Caleb Jimerson exceeded 105 pitches for the previous two days. Jimerson threw 20 pitches and got one out in Tuesday’s opener of a scheduled doubleheader against Lewiston.

“I don’t think I’ve come across that in my time as coach,” third-year Post Falls coach Kurt Reese said. “We were going off the daily chart, which we had. They called it by the verbiage in the rule book. We thought we were good, but we were wrong.”

The rule states no varsity pitcher can throw over 100 pitches over two consecutive days.

“We thought we were staying within the rules,” Reese said. “But that was something we weren’t aware of.”

Post Falls (10-9, 7-9 IEL) is scheduled to play Lake City in the conclusion of a suspended game today at 4 p.m. in Post Falls. Lake City has the bases loaded with one out leading 5-4 in the top of the sixth inning.

“We’re definitely in some uncharted territory now,” said Reese, whose team concludes the regular season by finishing another suspended game at Lakeland on Friday. “We’ve got to try to piece it together. It doesn’t take away from the effort our guys made today and we’ll have to use the next two games to keep building.”

Lewiston is 13-9, 10-8.

Kellogg 13-8

St. Maries 5-3

OSBURN — Gabe Nosworthy had two hits and four RBIs for the Wildcats in the first game of a Central Idaho League sweep of the Lumberjacks at Morehouse Field.

With the win, Kellogg (8-10, 5-6 CIL) moves past St. Maries (9-13, 4-8) for third in the league standings.

St. Maries will open the 2A District 1-2 tournament at home against fifth-seeded Priest River on Friday.

ROCKFORD, Wash. — Senior Acacia Pecor struck out 13 for the Tigers, whose only hit came on a single by Aliliah Dykes in the top of the seventh inning in a nonleague loss to the Scotties, who were paced by a 15 strikeout day by Kaylee Ripke.

“Acacia pitched a great game today for us,” Timberlake coach Casi Lupinacci said. “We just didn’t give her any run support. Freeman’s pitcher was one of the better ones we’ve seen this year so far, but we also need to make adjustments in the box. Defensively, we have some things we need to clean up as well.”

Timberlake (11-8) travels to Bonners Ferry on Friday.

Freeman is 14-3.
