PREP SOFTBALL: Davenport, Bridge fuel Coeur d’Alene’s sweep of Lake City

| May 1, 2024 1:21 AM

COEUR d’ALENE — A pair of freshmen came up big as the Coeur d’Alene Vikings swept the Lake City Timberwolves 8-1 and 5-1 in Inland Empire League softball Tuesday at Lake City to remain tied for first place in the league.

Jenna Davenport pitched a pair of complete games for Coeur d’Alene, striking out 12 in the opener and nine in the nightcap.

“She pitched phenomenal,” Coeur d’Alene coach Bobbi Darretta said. “She’s been working hard at figuring out her mechanics, and she pitched fantastic. I’m getting to the point where if one pitcher is doing well, leave them in until they start to burn out.”

Bridge, the catcher, went 5 for 9 on the day with five RBIs. In the nightcap, she singled in a run in the first inning and hit a two-run inside-the-park homer to right field in the seventh.

“She’s just so quick, she hits so hard, and when she gets a hold of one … “ Darretta said of Bridge, who started the season at shortstop, then was moved to catcher. “Kyndal is a beast behind the plate and a beast at the plate.”

Coeur d’Alene (15-5, 13-3) and Lewiston (13-7, 13-3) remain tied for first in the IEL, after Lewiston swept Post Falls on Tuesday.

IEL play wraps up on Thursday, with Coeur d’Alene home against Post Falls in a doubleheader, and Lewiston traveling to Lake City (13-7, 11-5)  for a pair. Lewiston holds the run-differential tiebreaker over Coeur d'Alene head-to-head, should the two teams end up tied in league.

Right fielder Morgan Knutson, a sophomore, made three diving catches, all in the first game, for Coeur d’Alene.

Another freshman, Molly Nelson, was 5 for 7 on the day with five runs scored. Chloe Burke and Abbey Linder each had three hits on the day.

“We had minimal errors, and everybody hit,” Darretta said.
