3Cs to give away record $135K to local charities

A successful anniversary fashion show, support from local businesses and the generosity of Cancer and Community Charities members are factors that have led to the largest giveaway in the nonprofit's history.
The 3Cs announced Tuesday it has broken its fundraising record and will give away a hefty $135,000 to 32 local charities and nonprofits during its Appreciation Lunch next month.
"We're excited," President Ann Dare said. "We're very proud."
In May, the benevolent organization held its 25th anniversary Silver Screen Dinner and Fashion Show at The Coeur d'Alene Resort. The event proved to be one of the 3Cs' best fashion shows to date.
"It was really successful," Dare said. "It was the largest that we've had."
Support for the fashion show and for the 3Cs in general has come from various local businesses that have held specials and events during which portions of proceeds have been dedicated to the nonprofit.
The 3Cs' 500 members also contributed their time, talents and treasures to make 2024 such a successful year for the group.
"Our ladies just work hard," Dare said.
Judy Gardner, chair of the 3Cs Appropriations Committee, said it's wonderful to raise this much money to give right back to the community.
"It's awesome," she said.
What began in 1962 as the Cancer Crusaders Bowling League has grown into the 3Cs nonprofit, encompassing activity groups such as the Gourmet cooking group, the Funables adventure group and the Coeur d’Aleers singing group. Members pay $25 in annual dues and often give small donations within their activity groups.
Since its inception, 3Cs members have given away more than $2.5 million to Kootenai County charities. Recipients apply and are interviewed by the ladies of the appropriations committee, which makes the funding allocation decisions.
"People don't realize the vetting process we go through to distribute our money," 3Cs board member Linda Pedersen said. "It is not an easy decision for any of us. We interview every single one, come back to the group and decide if they're worthy of what they're asking for."
Past grant recipients include local food banks, the Northwest Infant Survival and SIDS Alliance/Safe Start, Canopy Village (formerly Children's Village), area senior centers, Family Promise of North Idaho, Orchard Ridge Senior Living and many more.
"Let's do this again," 3Cs treasurer Lisa Thomas said, "only bigger!"
