Planning and Zoning to review Hayden's growth plan

Planning and zoning's board of commissioners opened Hayden's comprehensive plan for review during a workshop Tuesday.

The review will determine if the goals and policies in the plan align with Hayden residents' vision for the future.

“From the 10,000-foot view, we’ve got a comprehensive plan, and it’s a plan that anticipates what the city needs up to 20 years from now,” Board Chair Alan Davis said. “Our comp plan is updated every five years, we’re on year three of the current comp plan ... I see this exercise as a step toward either prematurely modifying or perhaps providing input to the next version of the future comprehensive plan.”

The commissioners will meet again at 4 p.m. Oct. 23 with suggestions to modify the goals and policies, or with notes on how the goals and policies don’t reflect what people want.

Commissioners will spend the coming week independently reviewing the goals and policies in the plan to have suggestions for the workshop.

To understand what residents want, commissioners were given new information from a citywide survey by OnPointe insights that was not originally included in the comprehensive plan.

The survey was commissioned by Hayden City Council members earlier this year and provides data on how residents feel about density, housing availability, green spaces and more.

The City Council requested the review of the comprehensive plan after receiving results from the survey.

The comprehensive plan is not a stone tablet, and commissioners can make adjustments to it if necessary, Davis said.

“I think our comp plan is made with excellent intention,” He added. “And sometimes when you spring something out you find out there was something you didn’t quite see. And you adjust it and you make it better. Because it’s not written in stone there’s no reason to overreact.”
