Happy birthday to us!
Special greetings to Williene Gagnon, Mark Hemenway, Rita Preston, Verla Packer, Randy McKahan, Jake Hobbs, Kathy White-Dunning, Liz Ricciardi and Breanne Ruff, who all share my May 14 birthdate today. The most senior member of the May Birthday Club is still going strong. Ace Walden will celebrate his 101st birthday on Saturday. He's marking the occasion by flying to Seattle to attend a concert. Really. Longtime resident Lawrence Frost celebrated 93 years on Monday. If you've been around long enough to remember when J.C. Penney was located on Second and Sherman, you might have met Mr. Frost there, before he retired in 1980.
A happy birthday to local folks celebrating in the merry month of May including a couple sets of twins; Ron and Dick Edinger and Luke and Blake English. Makaiah Huelar not only celebrates his seventh birthday in May but is also the VIP First-Grader at Ponderosa Elementary this week. Bob Paulos enjoyed a long and storied half century career with the same company, a feat most of my generation isn't likely to mirror. I came to The Press in the last years of Bob's tenure but he really wasn't good at retiring. He visited the newspaper office regularly and of course continued his leadership of the Christmas for All program. What will I remember about Mr. Paulos? I will remember a man who absolutely lived and breathed the newspaper business. I loved hearing his stories of the old days of newspapering, which for him began 10 years before I was born. I will remember him as a man absolutely devoted to his beautiful bride, Virginia, long after Alzheimer's stole her memories of their wonderful life together. As Bob and Virginia begin their sunset journey to be closer to family in Oklahoma, I hope they realize how much better this community is for them having made their home here.
If you missed Kevin Gonzalez' Pappy Boyington Field documentary during the Coeur d'Alene Film Festival, you have a chance to see it this weekend at Hayden Cinema 6. Theater owner Curtis Deming scheduled the film during Armed Forces Day weekend and a portion of the $5 ticket price will be donated to the local Pappy Boyington Detachment of the Marine Corps League. 762-SHOW.
Our friend Louise Shadduck had a send-off befitting her lifetime of loving Idaho and especially Coeur d'Alene. The overflow crowd at her First Presbyterian Church home was an eclectic mix of dignitaries, including former Gov. Phil Batt, current Gov. Butch Otter, former governor and current Lt. Gov. Jim Risch, state senators and representatives, Mayor Sandi Bloem and former mayor Steve Judy, and regular folks of all ages. The reception after was the type of gathering that Louise would have relished, hugs and laughter and friends coming together. If there ever was a life well lived, it was hers. If there ever were an example of how to live life well, it was Louise Shadduck.
