Dr. Priscilla Bell

More than a great place

As I, like many North Idahoans, left a recent session of our amazing 32nd annual Popcorn Forum, I thought of the many ways North Idaho College contributes to our region.

Tony Stewart, NIC faculty member and Popcorn Forum founder, is just one example -- albeit a special one -- of what NIC does beyond the classroom. A couple of staff members were asked how NIC personnel repay the region that does so much for NIC. It didn't take long.

Take Sherry Wallis, our customized training director. She is the Chair of the Post Falls Chamber of Commerce and is active with the Women's Leadership Conference of the Inland Northwest. Or her boss Robert Ketchum, executive director of workforce training, who has served the Jobs Plus board for several years.

Mikki Stevens, instructor in our Culinary Arts program, is perhaps better known as the founder of the Red Hot Mamas. Robert Singletary, who teaches in our Communications, Fine Arts and Humanities division, may be best known as a local historian of renown.

Paul Manzardo, who chairs Physical Education and Resort Recreation Management, is often seen on area basketball court officiating games. Alex Harris, recreational sports coordinator, officiates adult softball and high school boys and girls basketball. Eric Murray, vice president for student services, kept trim the last two years by officiating area high school soccer. Fellow Vice President Rolly Jurgens can usually be found on weekends serving at the Lake City Community Church soup kitchen.

Philosophy instructor Michelle Lippert is a veteran member of the Post Falls school board. Music instructor Terry Jones, when he isn't leading NIC music groups, keeps his own skills sharp in the Fort Sherman Band.

Athletics director Al Williams deserves a paragraph all his own, given his participation on the Kootenai County Task Force on Human Relations, the Human Rights Education Institute, and the North Idaho Boys and Girls Club boards.

Virginia Tinsley Johnson, who chairs our Communication, Fine Arts and Humanities division and has served NIC nearly four decades, is active in the Coeur d'Alene Arts and Cultural Alliance, among others. Public information officer Stacy Hudson and NIC Trustee Judy Meyer serve on the Chamber Education Committee.

Gary Stark, physical plant supervisor, coaches an American Softball Association softball team in Coeur d'Alene. Sandra Jacquot, senior accountant, volunteers time to AARP to help senior citizens prepare their tax returns.

Erna Rhinehart, our communications and marketing director, is active in Sunrise Rotary and on the board for the Kootenai County Task Force on Human Relations. Stewart is a founding member.

These examples are a fraction of the contributions our faculty and staff make to improve the quality of life in North Idaho. My apology to the scores of others who dedicate time and talent to service clubs and civic groups, churches and communities around the region.

Many faculty and staff work hard each year helping to raise funds for United Way. And if you have admired some of the publications promoting Sting soccer, the Coeur d'Alene Marathon and others, chances are they were done by NIC graphic design students.

I could, and at some point I might, continue on this theme with some samples of NIC personnel who are similarly involved at the state, regional and even national level. But for now, you get the picture. NIC is a wonderful place, but its people are its true strength.

" "Let's 'dream big, dream together", by Sandi Bloem.

Hey Sandi, you failed to mention that all Kootenai County property tax payers will pay more for your "BIG DREAM". Tax the residents of CDA not the County for your "BIG DREAM".

Hey Sandi, you failed to mention the hundred million dollars or more to develop the $10,000,000 land purchase that Kootenai County tax payers will pay.

Hey Sandi, you failed to mention that TEN Kootenai County Urban Renewal Districts will get more tax money as a direct result of NIC taking foregone taxes. The two which will get the most tax money are CDA's two URDs.

Hey Sandi, you failed to mention that certain favorite developers will be enriched by the Education Corridor.

Hey Sandi, you failed to mention that Mike Kennedy works for Steve Meyer who is the business partner of Charlie Nipp and Nipp is the Chairman of the LCDC.

Hey Sandi, you failed to mention that you received tax money from the LCDC to buy the nice advertising awning located on your jewelry store.

Hey Sandi, you could care less about the average tax payer.

" Priscilla, you did a great job getting Tony Stewart out of CDA! Thanks from the simply average thinkers that Tony didn't want anything to do with! "

" Judith Meyer is one smart cookie.

Judith figured out how to get free land from the Kootenai Shoshone Area Library District (KSAL).

Judith got the free land from the Hayden Library.

Why can Judith get free land from a public taxing district?

Judith please tell us all about the special deal you got for hubby and Charlie while an elected trustee of KSAL?

Maybe you will be asked to explain yourself at the upcoming NIC forum on May 22nd.

Better be ready to do some explaining Judith.

See you there Judith, you will be asked. "

" As long as Dr Bell's definition of success meets your definition of succes, she will be in the faculty's "good graces". Just ask Dr.Barbara Hanson. You should of been fired for leading the faculty lynch mob. Come this November, there will be changes in NIC leadership and your faculty lynch mob actions will no longer be tolerated. "

T Stewart wrote on May 9, 2008 2:01 PM:

" My, I must say to all Popcorn Forum viewers that Priscilla Bell has made a big difference in her short time at NIC.

We are lucky that she came to NIC and we will be a better place because of her.

I as well as all the faculty will do our utmost to help her succeed. "

" There is no way that NIC represents North Idaho. It is Coeur d"Alene's grade 13,14 and 15 for CHS and LCHS. Post Falls, Rathdrum,Sandpoint, Bonners Ferry, Harrison and the rest are just hosts for the LCDC parasites. Send your kids to P U! "

RECALL JUDY MEYER wrote on May 8, 2008 11:07 AM:

" Gee, the NIC board of trustees left out a few important points about taking foregone taxes.

Why are taxpayers last to know the facts?

Once NIC takes foregone taxes to buy the DeArmond mill site, the proposed 17.248 acre Educational Corridor, there are other property tax consequences.

NIC FOREGONE TAXES WILL CAUSE TEN URBAN RENEWAL DISTRICTS LOCTED IN KOOTNAI COUNTY TO GET MORE PROPERTY TAXES.

THAT'S RIGHT, URBAN RENEWAL DISTRICTS GET MORE PROPERTY TAXES IN ADDITION TO THE NIC FOREGONE TAXES.

BUT WAIT, JUDY MEYER'S HUSBAND AND HIS BUSINESS PARTNER ARE ON URD BOARDS.

THEREFORE, JUDY MEYER'S SUPPORT OF FOREGONE TAXES WILL CAUSE HUBBY'S URD AND HIS PARTNER'S URD TO HAVE MORE TAX MONEY TO SPEND.

So why should Judy Meyer support funding of the Educational Corridor via a bond levy?

Because with a bond levy no property taxes will go to URDs as a result of passage.

Because voters will not pass a bond levy.

A bond levy is one way to allow the will of the people to be heard.

Judy Meyer doesn't care to listen. "

Your tenure is more based on CDA voters than the greedy buzzards you listen to. as for 'Democrats for Education'...I think wine can be served at NIC for selected events, but the koolaid is so much better. " So the University of Idaho will fund a "Sewage Research" facility located in the University Place Kootenai County, the DeArmond mill site. That's why Blue Water Technologies, the City of CDA and the U of I are planning to spend hundreds of millions of dollars. Yea, but we can train high schoolers how to run the sewage plant. Thank-you Dr. Bell for the inside info. Wine is good! "
