You just got pwned

When it comes to Internet frenzies, I'm always a step behind. Google Earth? Amazing!

But one thing will never change. Nerds will defend their pop culture obsessions by slandering others anonymously in blogs. If you're looking for a good laugh, nothing's funnier than a discussion forum devoted to movies (try imdb.com to start).

Some online forums present thoughtful analysis of the latest cinema offerings. Others progress into shouting matches ripe with poor grammar and peculiar acronyms.

One of the hottest insults flying around these days is: "pwn." Originally a term reserved for hackers infiltrating a web site, video gamers began using the term to express dominance over a less-skilled competitor. Someone playing "Halo" might say, "You just got owned" after repeatedly killing another player. The "p" replacing the "o" only adds emphasis to the insult.

These days, "pwned" is being used in many chats. I've crafted a mock forum discussion to help everyone with the term the way I understand it. You might find something like this online:

Thread Title: Order of the Phoenix Rocked My World!

"Just got back from Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix. Best. Wizard. Movie. Ever. Gary Oldman completely pwned the movie. ;) ;)"
